Child & Teen Services
Our treatment approach is collaborative, individualized, and based in scientific research. Before beginning therapy, we like to meet both the child and caregivers to thoroughly assess and understand what brings your family to therapy, what previous experiences might be contributing to current concerns, unique family values, and specific therapy goals. This information will help us conceptualize how to best help you and develop a treatment plan for moving forward.
We view ourselves as “coaches” who assist children and families in learning new skills while also serving as a supportive and encouraging presence. We tailor our approach to treatment based on each family’s presenting concerns, and our goal is to see marked improvements in functioning as soon as possible. We have specialized experience using cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) with children, adolescents, and families, and we use measures validated in science to measure change and improvement in functioning over the course of treatment with each family we see.
CBT focuses on expanding awareness of reactions to stress, enhancing communication of emotional states, learning coping skills to handle difficult emotions and reduce unhelpful behaviors, practicing these skills in a variety of situations, and collaborating with family members on how to best support your child. CBT takes a flexible approach to meet the individual needs and unique presentation of a family. Therapy will help to:
Enhance understanding of the intersection between feelings, thoughts, and behaviors
Improve emotion and thought identification
Develop tools to “challenge” thoughts
Enhance problem-solving abilities
Learn relaxation strategies
Learn strategies to tolerate difficult emotions, including anxiety
Increase ability to face feared situations
Improve communication within the family
Strengthen parents' confidence with supporting their child face difficult situations

Helping parents better understand the factors that contribute to and maintain psychological difficulties is an important step towards mental health. In fact, parent “coaching” is often a critical and powerful component for the mental health treatment of children and teens! Once parents better understand why their children are acting the way they are, and how they can adapt parenting strategies to improve outcomes, the relationship between parents and children often significantly improve.
